Hello, I am Mala’ika!

I am a digital creator based in Winnipeg, MB. I have always had a knack for creativity, art, and storytelling. As a third culture kid, I was raised with influences from Nigerian, Ghanaian, Filipino, and Canadian cultures. These memories combined with my experiences of bullying, racism, and intolerance led me to begin writing the stories and creating the representation that I never had growing up.

The Book That Started it All

“Amina’s Afro” is a fun story that teaches young readers about inclusivity, confidence, and diversity. Amina and her friends embark on a fun journey of expression and individuality as Amina tries new hairstyles and her friends try to do the same. It was important to me to provide positive representation of afro textured hair after being bullied for my own hairs growing up. I am delighted that this book is quickly finding its way into homes and schools across the globe. Amina’s Afro is also available at the Winnipeg Public Library!

Jamilah’s Family

My second book “Jamilah’s Family” is loosely based on my own family. This story follows the adventures of a multigenerational and multicultural home as their family expands! When I was younger there were never any books with families that represented mine. This felt particularly strange because a multigenerational home was very common among my friends! I am once again overwhelmed by the positive feedback from families like Jamilah’s thanking me for creating stories for them!

Future Horizons

Fueled by the success of my debut story books, I intend to continue to captivate readers with more exciting tales in the future. My unique combination of personal experiences and imagination ensures that there are still many stories to come! While working on my next books, I am also enjoying visiting schools, libraries, and community events sharing my experiences and reading my books!
